Crewed Yacht Charter Types in Greece

From fast and luxurious to spacious and family-friendly, each yacht type offers a very different charter experience. We’ve helped hundreds of clients find the right yacht type for their Greek yacht charter vacations.

• Want to cover long distances and enjoy full-service luxury? A Greece motor yacht charter is the way to go.
• Prefer a big, stable platform to relax with the family? A Greece catamaran charter will be perfect.
• Dreaming of sails and silence? That’s your classic Greece sailing yacht charter.

Greece Yacht Charter Highlights

Everyone has heard of Mykonos and Santorini—but they’re far from the full story. With years of experience on the water and conversations with hundreds of Captains, we know the places worth reaching by yacht. Think Wild cliffside anchorages, traditional tavernas with no road in, and islands where you can tie stern to the rocks and dive into crystal clear water away from crowds.

⚲ Cyclades Islands

EXPLORE THE PIRATE CAVES OF MILOS

We always recommend a stop at Milos—it’s consistently ranked a top island by captains we work with. Once a pirate hideout, this Cycladic gem is full of sea caves and beaches you can only reach by boat. On a Greece yacht charter, Milos is exactly the kind of place that makes sailing here so special.

⚲ Saronic Gulf

LAUNCH THE WATER TOYS AT AGISTRI

Agistri’s uninhabited side is one of our favorite anchorages in the Saronic Gulf. You’ll tie stern-to the rocks, launch every water toy on board, and spend the day in total privacy. This is what a Saronic yacht charter is all about—calm seas, short distances, and wild places you can’t get to any other way.

⚲ Ionian Islands

VISIT UNESCO-LISTED CORFU OLD TOWN

Dock near Corfu’s UNESCO-listed old town and explore pastel streets shaped by Venetian, French, and British influences. It’s one of Europe’s most picturesque port cities, and a perfect cultural stop on an Ionian yacht charter—especially when paired with Paxos, Antipaxos, and the sea caves to the south.

Our Favorite Greece Yacht Charters

Each year, we attend yacht shows across the Mediterranean — including MEDYS in Nafplion and EMMYS in Poros — where we personally inspect hundreds of yachts and meet their crew. From these, we curate the best-performing Greece yacht charters and film detailed walk-through videos, so you can see what life onboard is really like.

Below are our most trusted recommendations — from fast motor yachts to spacious catamarans and the most sparkling superyachts.

Greece Yacht Charter Areas

Greece has five main yacht charter regions, each offering a different style of cruising, from the iconic whitewashed cliffs of the Cyclades Islands to the lush landscapes of the Ionian Islands. Some are ideal for catamarans and relaxed sailing; others are better suited to powerful motor yachts that cover more ground.

Here’s how they compare, based on real routes, crew insight, and what actually works on the water.

Map of Greece Yacht Charter Areas Greek Island Groups
Mykonos Port

Cyclades Yacht Charters

The Cyclades are the most iconic island group in Greece — home to famous Santorini and Mykonos, and many more stunning islands. But a Cyclades yacht charter also means long distances (150nm from Athens to Santorini), open-sea crossings, and windier conditions, especially during the Meltemi season, so flexibility is key.

Mykonos Port

Saronic Yacht Charters

Just a short cruise from Athens, a Saronic yacht charter offers some of the easiest and most accessible sailing in Greece, with loads of protected bays and short distances between islands. It’s the perfect region for easy island hopping, especially for families or first-time charter guests.

  • Best for: Catamaran charters out of Athens
  • Highlights: Neoclassical harbors, car-free villages, ancient ruins
  • Favorites: Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Agistri
  • Pro tip: The Saronic Gulf is less crowded than the Cyclades — perfect for easy cruising without long crossings.
Mykonos Port

Ionian Yacht Charters

The Ionian Islands are Greece’s greenest region — known for calm seas, gentle breezes, and smooth sailing conditions that make itinerary planning more reliable. An Ionian yacht charter is ideal for families or guests seeking scenic cruising, historic harbors, and relaxed island culture.

  • Best for: Motor yachts for maximum exploration or catamarans for selected areas.
  • Highlights: Venetian towns, sea caves, pine-covered bays
  • Favorites: Kefalonia, Ithaca, Paxos
  • Pro tip: Charter a motor yacht and cruise from Corfu south toward Zakynthos. (13onm)
Symi Island in the Dodecanese

Dodecanese Yacht Charters

A Dodecanese yacht charter takes you off the beaten path to a stretch of islands rich in ancient Greek, Byzantine, and Ottoman history. Expect dramatic coastlines, medieval harbors, and far fewer crowds than the Cyclades.

  • Best for: Motor yachts, traditional Gulets, history lovers, and return charterers
  • Highlights: Ancient ruins, medieval castles, and Ottoman ports
  • Favorites: Rhodes, Symi, Patmos
  • Pro tip: Fly into Rhodes and cruise north to explore a different side of Greece.
Symi Island in the Dodecanese

Sporades Yacht Charter

A Sporades yacht charter takes you to one of Greece’s best-kept secrets — a lush, serene cluster of islands easily reached via Volos, Skiathos, or Thessaloniki. Known for calm sailing conditions, short hops between islands, and the Alonissos–Northern Sporades Marine Park, the largest marine protected area in Europe, home to the endangered monk seal, dolphins, and more.

  • Best for: Catamarans, families, nature lovers, and off-the-beaten-path cruises
  • Highlights: Pine-covered bays, hidden sea caves, and traditional seaside tavernas
  • Favorites: Skopelos, Skiathos, Alonissos, Skyros
  • Pro tip: Choose a catamaran or sailing yacht — the region’s sheltered waters and short legs make for relaxed, effortless cruising.

Greece catamaran charter

Catamaran Charters in Greece

A Greece catamaran charter offers comfortable cruising and great value for money. Catamarans are stable, spacious, and fuel-efficient — perfect for relaxed island hopping with family or friends.

  • Best for: Families, small groups, and first-time charterers.
  • Pros: Great stability, spacious, affordable, and fuel-efficient → lower APA costs.
  • Cons: Significantly slower than motor yachts – less suited for long-range itineraries (avoid long crossings like Athens to Santorini in one week).
  • Top Areas: Saronic Gulf and Western Cyclades
  • Price Range: €15,000 to €90,000 per week
Greece motor yacht charter

Motor Yacht Charters in Greece

A Greece motor yacht charter is ideal for covering more ground in less time — perfect for longer itineraries with full-service luxury, full crew, and water toys onboard.

  • Pros: Fast, luxurious interiors, larger crew, full water toy setups (jet skis, seabobs, foils).
  • Cons: Higher fuel use and APA, less stable in high winds, may need to stay in port during strong Meltemi conditions.
  • Top Areas: Cyclades, Ionian Islands, Dodecanese – ideal for longer-distance routes.
  • Price Range: €40,000 to €250,000+ per week
Greece sailing yacht charter

Sailing Yacht Charters in Greece

A sailing yacht charter in Greece offers a classic, wind-powered experience with adventurous cruising and a strong connection to the sea, ideal for purists or anyone seeking an authentic sailing experience with a luxury edge.

  • Pros: Quiet under sail, fuel-efficient → lower APA, not restricted by port regulations when the Meltemi blows strong.
  • Cons: Slower travel, less steady, less interior space than catamarans and motor yachts; itinerary may depend on wind conditions.
  • Top Areas: Saronic Gulf, Sporades, and Cyclades, especially when Meltemi winds are steady.
  • Price Range: €12,000 to €200,000 per week

Not Sure What Type of Yacht You are Looking For?

No worries, that is what we are here for! It is better to inquire too early than too late, and our brokers are happy to brainstorm ideas with you, even if you are not yet set on a yacht type or destination. Reach out, and we will send you a list of options to get started.

How Much Does a Yacht Charter in Greece Cost?

The cost of a Greece yacht charter depends on the type of yacht, its size, and level of luxury. Prices typically start at around €15,000 per week, but we recommend a budget of €30,000 or more for a quality crewed experience.

A motor yacht charter in Greece will cost more than a sailing yacht or catamaran, but it allows for faster travel and full-service luxury.

In addition to the base rate, expect to pay:

  • APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): 25–40% of the charter fee (higher for motor yachts due to fuel)

  • VAT (tax): Usually 12% for one-week charters in Greece

  • Crew gratuity: 10–20%, based on service quality

We’ve helped clients plan successful charters at every budget level. Reach out and we’ll match you with the right yacht and crew — with no surprises.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best months for luxury yacht charter in Greece?

April–October is the standard charter season:

  • April–May & September–October: Our clients love these shoulder seasons—fewer crowds, warm sea temperatures, gentle winds. It’s often cited as the best time to charter.

  • June–August: High season with hot weather. Expect strong Meltemi winds in July and August (Beaufort 5–7 in the Aegean) — great for sailing enthusiasts, but may limit relaxed cruising in exposed areas like the Cyclades.

  • March, November: Off-season options are possible in select regions; water can be cold and services limited.

How far can you go on a one-week private yacht charter in Greece?

It depends on the yacht, the weather, and your fuel budget.

As a rule of thumb, we recommend 2–3 hours of cruising per day. That’s roughly:

  • 40–50 nautical miles per day on a motor yacht

  • 15–25 nautical miles on a catamaran or sailing yacht

Weather — especially Meltemi winds — can affect your daily range, particularly in the Cyclades. Our brokers help tailor your itinerary based on yacht type, fuel range, and sea conditions.

Is VAT included in the yacht charter price?

Not always.

Some yachts include VAT, others don’t—especially if they operate across different countries. Ask your broker; we confirm the exact VAT and help clients navigate the most cost-effective options.

What is my chance of getting to Santorini?

It depends on your yacht type, starting point, and weather.

Santorini is around 150 nautical miles from Athens, which is too far for most catamarans or sailing yachts on a 7-day charter. The crossing can also be rough, especially during the Meltemi season.

For one-week charters:

  • ✅ A large motor yacht can reach Santorini comfortably.

  • ⚠️ Catamarans or sailing yachts should either start closer (e.g., in Mykonos) or choose a different island group.

We help our clients design realistic, weather-smart itineraries — so if Santorini is a must, we’ll advise you on the best way to make it happen.

What you need to know before chartering a yacht to Santorini

Can we get a yacht for more than 12 people?

Only on certain licensed vessels.

Most charter yachts in Greece are legally limited to 12 guests. If you are more than 12 guests who want to charter together, you have a couple of options:

  • Chartering one of the few yachts that is licensed to carry 12+ guests
  • Booking a tandem charter – two yachts chartering together
  • Chartering a motor yacht with an additional chase boat

Greece Yacht Charters for 12+ Guests

What is the advance provisioning allowance?

APA is a budget for running costs.

It covers food, fuel, port fees, and other onboard expenses. Usually 25–40% of the charter fee, it’s managed by the captain and adjusted based on actual use.

Learn more about yacht charter APA in Greece

How early should I book my Greek yacht charter?

Ideally 9–12 months in advance.

Top yachts book early, especially in high season. We always recommend securing the yacht before booking flights, and keeping dates flexible by a day or two if possible.

Nadja Asmus at DMA did a great job understanding our needs, and provided many options for consideration. She took the time to review different types of boats, amenities, itineraries, etc. Her work on arranging the charter, making any changes we requested, finalizing the deal and following up all along the way was outstanding. […] The interaction with the crew was memorable and we were amazed at all the great locations we were able to see. Arguably, one of the best vacations ever.
