Sporades Yacht Charter

Why Charter a Yacht in the Sporades Islands?

The Sporades are one of the easiest island groups to explore by yacht. Located just off the eastern coast of mainland Greece, they are lush, green, and far less windy than the Cyclades. It is a region we often recommend for first-time charters or families looking for relaxed conditions.

This area combines easy access (you can start in Volos, Skiathos, Thessaloniki, or Chalkidiki) with short hops between islands and plenty of protected bays. Expect pine-covered cliffs, clear water, proper Greek tavernas, and hidden beaches you can only reach by boat.

The Most Popular Sporades Islands for Yacht Charters

Skiathos

The most developed island in the Sporades, and your likely starting point. Known for nightlife and beaches: you have over 60 to choose from, with Koukounaries and Lalaria the most famous. The marina is small but well-located. Anchor at Koukounaries, then head into town for dinner.

Skopelos

Famous first as the Mamma Mia island, but there is far more here: deep green pine forests drop straight into the sea, the anchorages around Panormos Bay are excellent, and the harbor towns still feel local. Dinner up in Glossa is the evening to plan around.

Alonissos

Home of the National Marine Park of Alonissos, the largest marine protected area in Europe at roughly 2,260 square kilometers: seven islands, 22 islets, and the main refuge of the Mediterranean monk seal. This is where you go for dolphins, empty coves, and the clearest snorkeling in the region, with remote Agios Dimitrios beach the standout.

Skyros

Further out and a different feel: less visited, more rugged, almost Cycladic. Worth the extra miles if your group prefers empty over easy. Walk the old town and reach the secluded beaches by tender.

Weather and Distances in the Sporades

The Sporades are sheltered from the worst of the meltemi, which makes this one of the calmest areas to cruise in Greece: typical summer wind here is force 3 to 4. You will still get breeze, but it is manageable, and the hops between the main islands are some of the shortest in the country.

Approximate passage times in calm weather:

Leg Distance Motor yacht (~16 kn) Catamaran (~7 kn)
Volos to Skiathos ~45 nm ~3 hrs ~6.5 hrs
Skiathos to Skopelos ~12 nm ~45 min ~2 hrs
Skopelos to Alonissos ~10 nm ~40 min ~1.5 hrs
Alonissos to Skyros ~28 nm ~2 hrs ~4 hrs

Best Yacht Type for a Sporades Yacht Charter

Catamarans are ideal here: stable, spacious, and perfect for the flat water and short hops that define the region.

Motor yachts earn their keep if you want to include Skyros or Chalkidiki without long days under way.

Sailing yachts get honest wind for real sailing, at a level newcomers can enjoy rather than endure.

Where to Start Your Sporades Yacht Charter

Skiathos is the best starting point for quick island access, with a small seasonal airport served from major cities.

Volos on the mainland has a bigger marina, more yacht options, and better provisioning, at the cost of a slightly longer first leg.

A Realistic Sporades Week

This is one of the few Greek regions where the classic week plan actually survives contact with the weather. From Skiathos: a first swim at Koukounaries, then the short hop to Skopelos for Panormos Bay and dinner up in Glossa, then on to Alonissos and the marine park: dolphins and monk seals if you are lucky, empty coves either way. With hops of 10 to 12 nautical miles, you are swimming more and cruising less, which is exactly why we recommend this route for families and first-time charters.

Skyros is the optional stretch: further out, more rugged, and worth it if your group prefers empty over easy, but it turns a relaxed week into a fuller one, so we only build it in when the brief calls for it. Give us your dates and group and we will tell you which shape fits.

Sporades Charter Questions, Answered

How much does a Sporades yacht charter cost?

Crewed catamarans start around €30,000 a week and motor yachts around €60,000, plus APA and Greek VAT. Few yachts are based locally, so most are positioned from Athens for your dates; we arrange that as part of the booking.

Where do Sporades yacht charters start?

Volos, Skiathos, Thessaloniki, or Chalkidiki. Skiathos has a small seasonal airport for the quickest island access; Volos sits on the mainland with a bigger marina and broader connections.

Is the Sporades windy?

It is one of the calmest areas in Greece: sheltered from the worst of the meltemi, with typical summer wind of force 3 to 4 and protected bays throughout.

Which island is the Mamma Mia island?

Skopelos. Much of the film was shot around the island, including the famous clifftop chapel of Agios Ioannis. By yacht you can anchor beneath scenery the tour buses only see from above.

Is the Sporades good for first-time charterers?

Yes, one of the best areas in Greece for it: short hops, protected bays, and relaxed conditions mean you anchor more and cruise less. That is exactly why we recommend it for families and first charters.

What is special about Alonissos?

It is home to the National Marine Park, the largest in Europe: dolphins, monk seals, secluded coves, and the best snorkeling in the region.
