Saronic Gulf Yacht Charter

Why Charter a Yacht in the Saronic Gulf?

A Saronic Gulf yacht charter is by far the safest and easiest charter area in Greece. Located just off the coast of Athens, the Saronic Gulf features short distances, well-protected anchorages, and a relaxed sailing experience. Most captains we talk to prefer this region for its balance of accessibility and authenticity.

The area includes standout islands like Spetses, Hydra, Poros, Aegina—and even the Peloponnesian gem of Epidaurus.

  • Calm conditions year-round – very rare weather cancellations
  • Shorter hops – no need for long passages
  • Ideal for catamarans and beginners
  • Great for 7-day charters starting from Athens
  • Greek charm without the Cycladic crowds

Best Saronic Islands

Spetses

The furthest island from Athens—but well worth it. Spetses is chic, historic, and often described as the “Greek Riviera.” Anchoring off Zogeria Bay is a favorite. The waterfront has a grand old charm—home to the historic Poseidon Hotel. Don’t miss a horse-drawn carriage ride along the promenade at sunset.

  • Highlight: Romantic dinners, Zogeria anchorage, and the Bouboulina Museum

Hydra

Hydra is car-free and famously charming. You’ll dock right in the town center, surrounded by mansions, donkeys, and waterfront cafes. Leonard Cohen bought a house here in the ’60s and wrote many of his iconic songs from this island. It’s also a favorite spot for hiking and clear-water swimming.

  • Highlight: Port town atmosphere, Vlichos Beach, and donkey rides

Poros

One of our favorite ports to sail into. You can moor along the waterfront promenade and walk straight into a taverna. Poros has great access to quieter beaches by tender, especially Love Bay and Vagionia. It also hosts the annual multihull yacht show EMMYS.

  • Highlight: Love Bay by tender, local tavernas

Epidaurus

Technically not an island, but one of the top stops in the area. Epidaurus is best known for its UNESCO-listed ancient theater, renowned for perfect acoustics. But what we recommend even more is snorkeling over the 2,000-year-old ruins of the Sunken City.

  • Highlight: Theater visits and swimming over history

Aegina

Usually the first or last stop on a charter. Aegina is famous for pistachios, beaches, and the Temple of Aphaia—one of Greece’s best-preserved temples. Captains always mention the pistachio ice cream, and in September there’s an entire pistachio festival.

  • Highlight: Temple of Aphaia, Agia Marina Beach, and pistachio ice cream

The ancient Greek temple of Aphaia dates back to around 500 BCE..The temple is dedicated to Aphaia, a local deity who was later associated with the goddesses Athena and Artemis.

Agistri

Anchor in the southern bay on the uninhabited side of Agistri Island. Here you tie stern to the rocks, which puts you right off the shore in shallow, crystal-clear water where you can see the bottom. It’s the perfect spot for launching water toys and spending a day just playing in the water. We recommend heading around the corner for a sunset drink at the little secret beach bar, Apónēssos —it’s honestly one of our favorite spots in all of Greece. We were there on a recent fam trip.

Understand Weather Conditions and Distances

The Saronic Gulf is one of the most reliable cruising areas in Greece when it comes to weather and distance. While the Meltemi can still blow here, it’s milder than in the Cyclades, and the islands offer plenty of protection. With shorter hops between destinations and lots of anchorages tucked into sheltered bays, you’ve got more flexibility and fewer weather worries.

From Athens to Spetses is only about 60 nautical miles total. That makes this the best area in Greece for relaxed island hopping—especially for catamarans and families who prefer calmer seas and less time under way.

Best Yacht Type for a Saronic Gulf Yacht Charter

The Saronic Gulf is the easiest cruising area in Greece—protected, close-knit, and beginner-friendly. That makes it a top pick for every yacht type.

Catamaran Charters

The number one choice for this region. Short distances and calm seas mean catamarans can shine—plenty of deck space, smooth sailing, and easy anchoring even in peak season. Great for families and relaxed itineraries.

Motor Yacht Charters

For those wanting extra speed and luxury, motor yachts are perfect here. Distances are short, so you won’t use much fuel, but you’ll still get the comfort, privacy, and flexibility of a floating villa.

Sailing Yacht Charters

The Saronic is ideal for monohulls too. The Meltemi is milder here, and the protected anchorages make it easy to find a comfortable mooring every night. A great region to enjoy real sailing without the stress.

Where to Start Your Saronic Yacht Charter?

The two main starting points are Corfu in the north and Lefkada in the central Ionian, each offering distinct advantages.

Athens Yacht Charters

All Saronic charters start from Athens. It’s close to the action (just 2-3 hours to Aegina) and has the biggest yacht fleet in Greece. Whether you’re chartering a catamaran or motor yacht, this is your most convenient base.

Most itineraries are round-trip from Athens, with 5-7 islands covered in a week.

Top Yachts Available for Charter in the Saronics This Year

These yachts were vetted by our team at the recent EMMYS and MEDYS yacht shows. We like them not only because they are great yachts, but because the crew has expressed their preference for the Saronic Islands. They know the area and its hotspots well. But since the Saronic Islands are right at the doorstep of Athens, the yacht availability is huge.
