6 km south of Ermoupoli is Ormos Varis. 3½ km to the north of Ormos Varis is the famous Syros National Airport. The island’s port located 5km off the coast, makes Vari beach a great stopover. The daily ferries from Ermoupoli also provide transport to this bay. It is a 6 mile trip around the North East tip of Syros and into the bay by boat. This picturesque village can get quite windy in some months, but the sheltered bay makes it easy to moor.
General Information
Vari is a delightful island town with a population of about 1,500 inhabitants. The administrative capital is at Ermoupoli, and it belongs to the municipal unit of Poseidonia. Around this small village are farms owing to the fertile nature of the land.
History of Ormos Varis
According to available archaeological evidence, Vari had inhabitants’ way back in the Cycladic period. Vari is one of the oldest and largest villages on the island of Syros.
The island of Syros had previous inhabitants from Persia, Rome, Turkey, France, and Germany, but the Greek culture of the people remained and flourished. The land is fertile, and the waters are pristine.
It was beautiful then, and it remains a beautiful sight to behold even now.
Beaches
Vari Beach
The Vari beach is perfect for beach games like volleyball. Like many Syros beaches, the Vari beach is sandy and pebbly. Beach umbrellas and taverns line the edge of the water. The beach is shallow, and the warm breeze makes it kid-friendly. These beaches are all found on the boundary of the Vari beach.
Fabrika Beach
This quiet beach has a small harbour where a small fishing boat can moor. Its name originates from a factory that produced ceramic objects.
Achladi Beach
This beach, located just a few hundred meters to the right of Vari beach, is small, sandy, and great for swimming. It has a tavern and a small harbor. The restaurant is well known for its Greek and Mediterranean dishes.

The ancient settlement
This ancient settlement is the oldest settlement found on Syros. Situated in nearby Koskonas, it dates as far back as 3000 BC.
Goulandris tower house
Owned by the Goulandris family, this tower is a sight to behold. Goulandris Tower is a grand house on the bay of Ormo Varis. The tower is impressive and shows great attention to detail. The striking medieval details are a work of art. The owners are famous ship owners in Syros.
Virgin Mary Panachrantos Church
In the 17th century, the French invaded Syros and brought Catholicism. They built a Monastery and numerous churches on the island. Though The Church of The Virgin Mary was built in 1856 after they had left, it only went to show that the people had adopted the religion to fit themselves.
The Virgin Mary Panachrantos Church sits on the central hill in the town of Vari. It was inaugurated in 1973 and dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
