Choosing the Ideal Yacht for Your Charter in the Cyclades

Quick Read: 3 minutes
We want you to be properly informed about the different factors that play into a yacht charter in the Cyclades. The main influence in this area is the Meltemi wind, which typically blows strongest in July and August and can reach force 8-9 on the Beaufort scale. It is, therefore, important to choose the right type of charter yacht based on its capabilities to handle the prevailing weather, ensuring you have a comfortable time on the water and reach the destinations expected in your itinerary.
Here is what you should know:
-
Motor Yachts vs Sailing Yachts
Motor Yachts
Motor yachts offer ultimate speed, a great advantage when chartering in the Cyclades, where the distances are big. However, speed is not everything in a place where the Meltemi blows. During strong Meltemi winds, motor yachts may be restricted from leaving port. (This is enforced by port authorities, which have to provide clearance before a yacht departs). This can lead to changes in itinerary and cause disappointment when clients’ expectations aren’t met. – One of the biggest concerns of a Captain

Sailing Catamarans
Although Catamarans are slightly slower than motor yachts, they do win in comfort. With their twin hull design, they sit more stable in the water, ensuring a more comfortable passage. Due to their sailing capabilities, sailing catamarans and sailing yachts, in general, do not face the same port restrictions as motor yachts. They can navigate safely during meltemi winds, making them a more reliable option for an uninterrupted yacht charter in the Cyclades.

Having Realistic Expectations
No matter what type of yacht you choose, a yacht charter in the Cyclades should come with some flexibility. While visits to high-demand locations such as Mykonos and Santorini are possible under favorable conditions, guests should be prepared for last-minute changes due to weather conditions.
-
Fuel Costs and Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA)
Fuel accounts for a significant part of the overall charter cost – reflected in the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The further you go, the more fuel you use, and the more it costs. Choosing a newer model yacht with a more efficient engine can significantly reduce fuel consumption, resulting in a lower APA.

Choosing the Right Broker
It is crucial to work with a broker who has personal experience with the yachts they present. Their firsthand knowledge of vessel performance, its amenities, and the crew is essential. Participation in yacht shows is fundamental to our approach. By engaging directly with crews and industry professionals, we exchange ideas, gather insights, and make great connections. This engagement ensures we can accurately match your needs with the right yacht.
