Sounion Yacht Charter Guide

Sounion is one of the most useful Athens-area yacht charter stops because it gives you the Temple of Poseidon without leaving the route logic of an Athens embarkation or return. We like it especially for first or last nights when the timing works.

It is not an island, but it belongs in the charter structure because it helps bridge Athens, Kea, Kythnos, and the Saronic. For many clients, sunset at the temple is a stronger first impression than rushing out too far on embarkation day.

Best For

  • First or last nights near Athens.
  • Clients who want the Temple of Poseidon built into the yacht plan.
  • Athens to Cyclades routes via Kea or Kythnos.
  • Saronic charters that need a scenic mainland stop.
  • Groups arriving late who should not force a long first passage.

What to See and Do

  • Temple of Poseidon: the clear reason to include Sounion, especially at sunset.
  • Cape Sounion coastline: scenic and useful for an Athens-area transition.
  • Lavrion nearby: sometimes relevant for embarkation logistics depending on the yacht.
  • Kea crossing: the natural next step toward the Cyclades.
  • Athens: easy to combine before or after the yacht.

Sounion Anchorage

Sounion can be a smart first or last stop, but it is still a captain’s call. Exposure, swell, and the group’s arrival time all matter. We use it when it makes the route more comfortable, not just because it looks good on a map.

A Short History of Sounion

Cape Sounion has been important since antiquity because of the Temple of Poseidon and its commanding position over the sea routes near Athens. On a yacht charter, that history is easy to understand: the temple still watches over one of the most important maritime gateways in Greece.
