Tinos is a charter location in Cyclades, a yacht charter area in Greece.
The anchorages on Tinos:
Location
The west coast of Tinos island is home to five anchorages that are seldom used due to poor shelter from the Meltemi winds and dangerous swells. Starting from the north coast of the west side, we meet Ormos Isternia, Ormos Kardiani, Ormos Romanou, Ormos Stavrou and after the main port of Tinos, Ormos Ay Nikolaos. These anchorage points can be used when the weather is calm.
Navigation
Ormos Isternia is found on the NW side of the island and the holding is reported to be mediocre in sand and seaweed bottom. Violent gusts off the hill from the NE and open to SE-NW winds as well. Best to anchor in 6-10m off the quay for better holding.
The scenic hamlet of Kardiani further south is one of the least frequented anchorages for yacht charters due to poor shelter from the Meltemi; use the N cove in the bay.
The small settlement of Agios Romanos has relatively shallow waters but provides moderate shelter. Anchor in 3-6m off the beach.
Next before reaching the port of Tinos, there is the option of anchoring in Ormos Stavros. This is a large bay directly to the NW of Tinos harbour in need of repairs on the quayside. Reef and shoal waters extend off the beach. Use the NW end of the bay to anchor in 5-10m but avoid it if possible.
The last of the west coast anchorages on Tinos is Ay Nikolaos also known as Agios Fokas. A semi-sheltered spot when the weather is calm that can be used if approaching Tinos from the south. Avoid completely when the Meltemi blows.
Provisioning
The West Coast anchorages that yacht charters in Tinos can use are often quiet. Ormos Isternia has some tavernas and small shops. Ormos Kardani and Ormos Romanou are the least visited and hence less likely to offer enough options for food, drink and shopping. Ormos Stavros and Ormos Ay Nikolaos (or Agios Fokas) are located on either side of the main port of Tinos.
Capacity and Technical Data
These anchorage points pose a challenge for those not familiar with the area and navigating the strong Meltemi gusts can be dangerous. When the weather is calm, the West Coast anchorages of Tinos offer a relaxing and secluded spot for swimming.
