Ormos Ay Nikolaos is an anchorage in Kythnos.

Kythnos is a charter location in Cyclades, a yacht charter area in Greece.

The anchorages on Kythnos:

Overview

Ormos Ay Nikolaos also called Agios Nikolaos or Saint Nicholas beach is a small secluded beach on Kythnos island. The unorganized beach owes its beauty to its crystal clear waters. Though it is more pebbly than sand, it also has white sand in some areas. The water is refreshing and makes swimming a pleasure. Saint Nicholas beach is usually deserted because it is so hard to reach. This is also why it is not family-friendly. It is impossible to reach by car but is a favourite of those who have yachts.

Navigation

Agios Nikolaos beach is in the southeastern part of the island. After Kanala bay, head down the dirt path that runs behind the bay to the south. The church of Agios Nicholas is on the right of the dirt path. Continue on the dirt path, then turn left at the crossroads, in less than a kilometre. Follow it for another 1.5 km till you reach the end of the road. There is a sign pointing to the beach. The road to the beach slopes down and is difficult to access, but swimming in the waters is rewarding. Coming with a car is difficult because of the slopes and hairpin bends. Cars will have to park on a plateau from where a path of about 200 meters leads to the beach.

Where to Anchor

The Agios Nikolaos bay is open to the south and the east. It usually doesn’t provide good shelter from dangerous winds and should be used only when the weather is calm. However, the swells do not disturb the boat. Anchor strength is good to moderate, and boats are encouraged to drop anchor on the Western side of the cove.

General Information

Agios Nikolaos is under the administration of Driopida. This beach is well off the beaten path and is described by some as a beach for nudists. It is also great for camping and spending some time relaxing. The hike down to the beach is not lost on a barren landscape as one can see the dry stone walls of the old Cycladic times.

Places of Interest

The chapel of Agios Nicholas

The chapel of Agios Nicholas, where this beach derives its name from, is on the southwestern side of Skylou beach. It is a white church with stone terraces and blue windows, similar to many chapels on the island.
