The anchorages on Koufonisia:
Koufonisia Anchorage
Koufonisia in the Epano Koufonisia part is the prominent anchorage on the island. It is characterized by a small basin whose entrance is just 15 meters wide, guarded by rock ballasts. This can make entry difficult, so caution is suggested while mooring.
The anchorage has favourable cover from the Meltemi but is completely open on the south and east ends.
In addition to the upper Koufonisia bay, it also has a deserted one to the northeast tip. This is preferred by solo travelers looking for a quiet spot.
Mooring at Koufonisia
It is best to get a local sea map of the Middle Cyclades before navigating to the Koufonisia waters. Anchor suggestion is between three to five meters, as the sandy seabed will provide decent holding. Also, make sure to anchor away from the ferry turning area, especially around the basin entrance.
The Koufonisia basin will provide decent cover from the Meltemi but is open to winds from the south. Entry to the basic can be tricky, so make sure you are well prepared before approaching the bay. More caution is suggested during the Meltemi season as residual swell can create a flutter.
If you prefer to sail to the anchorage in the northeast tip, use caution around the shallow water.
Provisioning and Services
Koufonisia village on the upper island has some tavernas and provisions. You can anchor at the bay and go into the town for better provisions.
