Ormos Fournos

Location

Ormos Fournos is the large bay directly E of Ormos Petrou and not far from the port of Gavrio on the island of Andros. Known only to locals and yacht charter enthusiasts, this quiet spot is found right opposite the islets of Prasso, Akamatis and Megalo. This spot is about halfway between Gavrio and the second most popular spot on the island, Batsi. The beach has clear and refreshing water and attracts international visitors and locals due to its golden sand. On the hill above, you can spot the Hellenistic tower of Agios Petros built in the 4th or 3rd century BC. Once used to patrol the sea below, it is now a protected monument. To reach the tower, drive to Gavrio and follow the signs. After a 15 min walk, you will enjoy the view of the bay below.

You can reach Ormos Fournos after passing Agios Petros beach on the E side of Ak Kourouni. The area provides better protection from nearby Agios Petros from the Meltemi winds. The best spot is in the NW corner even though some swell is still pushed into the bay. Watch out for mooring buoys located around the area. The bottom has a relatively good hold with sand.

Provisioning

The two beaches nearby are busy during the summer months with tavernas, bars and a few mini-markets operating every day. There are also frequent buses to Chora and other villages. 

Capacity and Technical Data

As one of the largest beaches on this island, this is a great spot even during high season that can be enjoyed from the water. The beach features powder-soft, golden sand and is fully organized with standard amenities, tavernas and beach bars. Because it is open to the wind, the waves attract water sport enthusiasts including surfers.
