Which Yacht Type Is Right for Your Greece Charter?

Not sure yet? Most of our Greece charters are on a crewed catamaran or a motor yacht.

Below, the 5 main types side by side, then the questions we ask every client before we shortlist a single yacht.

How do the yacht types compare in Greece?

Prices are for the yacht and crew per week in high season. Greek VAT, usually 13% or less depending on the yacht, applies to the charter fee, not the APA.

What does your budget get you?

Under about €60,000 a week, we steer most clients to a catamaran charter in Greece. At that budget, a catamaran gets you a newer yacht with more deck space than a motor yacht at the same price.

An 80 ft catamaran has about the same deck area as a 115 ft motor yacht. That is why we never compare the two by length. At a like-for-like €80,000, the catamaran almost always wins on space.

From about €60,000 a week, the motor yacht charter in Greece list opens up. Most of our motor yacht clients book between €100,000 and €250,000, and that range includes yachts of 100 ft and over.

From about €250,000 a week, you are into our superyacht charter in Greece selection, with close to 1 crew member per guest, spa areas and the biggest toy lists.

How many guests are coming?

Most Greek catamarans take 8-10 guests, in 4 or 5 cabins. At 12 the choice usually moves to a motor yacht, a sailing yacht or a superyacht, because only about 1 in 10 catamarans takes 12.

Greek rules cap most charter yachts at 12 guests while underway. For more than 12 guests, we either put the group on 2 yachts that cruise together, or on one of the few yachts licensed for more. See our yacht charters for 12+ guests in Greece.

How far do you want to go in a week?

We plan 2 to 3 hours of cruising a day at most, so the yacht’s speed decides how much of Greece fits in a week.

  • On a sailing catamaran, the Saronic Gulf and the Ionian are ideal: short hops, sheltered water, a new bay every day.
  • Athens to Santorini in a week is unrealistic on a catamaran and very doable on a motor yacht.
  • If your list includes Mykonos and Santorini, read which yacht type suits a Mykonos to Santorini charter.

Our 9 knots vs 16 knots guide shows what the difference in speed means day by day.

Does anyone in the group get seasick?

In July and August the meltemi wind blows across the Cyclades. A catamaran’s 2 hulls keep it flat at anchor, which is why many families choose one. Underway in a strong wind, a larger motor yacht with stabilizers is the smoother ride. See stabilizers on a Greek yacht charter.

If seasickness is a real worry, the Ionian is the calmer sea in high summer.

Do you want to sail?

A sailing yacht is the classic yacht experience: sails up, engine off, and the island ahead getting closer on the wind alone. With a crew aboard you can join in as much or as little as you like. In the Cyclades it means embracing the meltemi rather than avoiding it, while the Ionian and the Saronic give gentler sailing.

How do we help you choose?

If you are still unsure, start with the number of guests and the route, not the yacht type. Tell us roughly where you want to go and who is coming, and we will shortlist yachts that fit the week, across every type.

People also ask

Is a catamaran better than a motor yacht for Greece?

For most budgets under €80,000 a week, yes: more space for the money, lower fuel costs and a stable platform at anchor. A motor yacht wins when the route is long or the group is 12.

What size yacht do we need for 12 guests?

Usually a motor yacht or sailing yacht of about 100 ft and over, or a superyacht. Few catamarans take 12.

What is the 12 person rule on a yacht?

Greek rules cap most charter yachts at 12 guests while underway. Larger groups charter 2 yachts together, or one of the few yachts licensed for more.

Which yacht type is cheapest to charter in Greece?

The lowest weekly price is on our all-inclusive yachts, from about €20,000 with everything included, but the selection is small. With expenses on top, a crewed sailing catamaran starts from about €30,000 a week.

What is the difference between a motor yacht and a superyacht?

Size, crew and price. Our superyacht selection starts at about €250,000 a week, with close to 1 crew member per guest, spa areas and beach clubs. Motor yachts run from about €60,000 to €250,000 a week.

Do all charter yachts in Greece come with a crew?

Every yacht we charter in Greece comes with a professional crew, catamarans included. The captain plans the route with you, and the crew cooks, cleans and looks after you all week.
