Naxos is a charter location in Cyclades, a yacht charter area in Greece.
The anchorages on Naxos:
Overview
Ormos Kouroupa, also known as Agios Ioannis, is located on the southwest coast, around 20km from Naxos town and the airport. This distance gives the area a wonderfully away-from-all-the-hustle-bustle atmosphere. The nearest beach is Alyki.
Navigation
Ormos Kouroupa is an open bay that lies just below Ak, Kouroupa. The most noticeable landmark as you approach is a huge abandoned hotel construction.
When the Meltemi is blowing down the straights between Paros and Naxos, it creates a swell around the northern end of the cape, which can make stopping here uncomfortable. When conditions are suitable, there’s good holding in sand and rocks at 4m-6m. There’s also a short pier, but it’s often blocked by rocks.
Beaches
Pyrgaki Beach
Pyrgaki Beach, tranquil and beautiful, is worth a visit. Fortunately, its position keeps it sheltered from the sometimes fierce north winds on this part of the coast. The entire area of brilliant white sands and wild dunes is under the protection of NATURA 2000 due to its unique environment.
Places of Interest
Juniper Forest of Alyko
This amazing wooded area covers virtually the entire surface of Ormos Kouroupa cape, which is almost 1000 acres! Junipers (Cedars), reaching 4-5m height sometimes and thrive in the white sandy dunes. Some of the trees here are thought to be over 200 years old, and you may spot small wild rabbits, rare birds, and other animals in this magical place.
Places to Eat
Taverna Trapezaki
Traditional food is prepared and served by the lovely ladies who run the taverna. Moussaka, zucchini pies, and of course huge local tomatoes stuffed with rice and herbs are some of the specialities. A true taste of authentic, ‘no frills’ Greek cooking is offered to the diners.
Psilli Ammos
What a stunning setting for a perfect vacation lunch! A wonderful garden with shade provided by a huge tree – the Psilli Ammos dining has food to die for! Try the fava with caramelized onions, and do not miss their barbecued octopus. They also have plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. The prices are reasonable and the service is friendly. It is an ideal place you would want to come back to, time and again.
