The anchorages on Kythnos:
Overview
Kolona beach is one of the most popular beaches on the whole of Kythnos island. It is famous for its unique sand bar, about 240 meters, linking it with a smaller rocky island. This one-of-a-kind sandy strip results in two beaches, one on either side. The waters of Kolona are famous for their crystal clear quality. The protection from Northern and Southern winds makes this place a true sailor’s paradise.
This impressive beach is located to the northwest of the Kythnos island and just north of the Merikhas harbor and opposite Apokrousi beach. The closest boarding facilities can be found
Navigation
The easiest way to reach Kolona beach is to join the water taxi from Merikhas. But for those who want to brave the rocky undulating road, it is 9km away from Merichas in the northern direction and past Apokrousis. It is 7km from Hora and approximately 4.5km from Chora. Take note that the road is rocky and very narrow as you get closer.
Where to Anchor
The bay is protected from winds on the north and the south. Expect dangerous winds from the west and the east and swells from the west. The bottom is mainly sandy with seaweed. Depending on the bottom, the anchor holds good or very good to moderate. The bay is 3-10 m deep. It is advisable to anchor in the North East, which measures about 3-10m on the sand. In the summer, you can take a long line to the Northern shore.
General Information
The beach has a few sun beds and umbrellas close to the tavern and only two trees to protect from the sun. Hence, it is a good idea for one to bring their chairs and umbrellas along. The beach is shallow and great for children but gets deep suddenly as you go farther. While this is great for divers and the yachts that flock here, it is advisable to watch children closely. The rolling hills around the beach are bare, but the deep color of the water in the beach still attracts tourists year after year. This bay is a great place to watch the sunset.
Places of Interest
St Luke’s Island
This small rocky islet provides clear views of the whole bay. A hike to the Chapel at the top of the hill will reward you with a view of the bay and its surrounding beaches.
Places to Eat
Kolona Bar/Restaurant
The lone restaurant at Kolona Beach, offers an array of dishes. They use fresh ingredients to provide customers with the best Mediterranean and Greek inspired dishes.
Conclusion
The name Kolona came from the column of sand that divides the beaches. Stunning yet disorienting for some, this beach is one of a kind. Because of the uniqueness of this column, there is hardly a problem of overcrowding. And the distinct position of the hills (though bare of vegetation) means that one can swim without strong winds disturbing. Whether for swimmers, deep divers, or those who want to watch the sunset and eat some good food, Kolona beach is always a great pick.
