Ormos Fikiahda is an anchorage in Kythnos.

Overview

Golden beach sand, turquoise water, and perfect scenery? Come to Fikiahda beach! As popular as the adjacent Kolona beach is, it can sometimes get overcrowded. Hence tourists and locals prefer the quiet lull of Fykiada. Boat owners might sometimes find Kolona bay packed with boats and need a tranquil anchorage to rest for the night. Fykiada provides this quiet bay for them, gives shelter from dangerous winds, and gives reliable anchorage.

Navigation

Tourists can access Fykiada by sea from Mericha port. Water taxis shuttle daily on the Kolona beach, which is right next to Fykiada beach. Fykiada beach lies approximately 9 km north of Merikhas. On getting to Apokrousis bay, you continue left on the road, which will lead you to Fykiada. The dirt path is narrow and undulating. Hence most tourists prefer to use the water ferry. From Chora, it takes 20 minutes. Go southwest and turn right at the junction to Merikhas. Follow the dirt road till you get to Apokrousis and continue on the left till you get to Fykiada.

Where to Anchor

You can anchor in 3-5m of sand and weed on Fykiadha bay. The seabed is sandy and filled with seaweed. It has a good holding as soon as the anchor goes through the sand. Boats that tie up in the bay have to be careful because the anchor may drift because of the gusts that come down from the mountain.

General Information

Enjoy scuba diving, sunbathing, and hiking on the quiet beach all by yourself, or play games and swimming with your family and friends. Fykiadha is just beside Kolona so that one can visit Kolona or get familiar with the ancient ruins of Vryokastro. Though there are no taverns or hotels here, you can get all you need at nearby Merichas.

Fykiadha Beach

Fykiadha Beach is more than just one of the 92 beaches on Kythnos. It is beautiful in pictures, safe for swimming, and gives a good anchor to boats. The beach of Fykiadha is unorganized but tourists can bring their umbrellas and sunbeds. It gives beachgoers a chance to enjoy peace and solitude away from the holiday crowds on a lot of other islands.

Kolona Beach

The popular beach with a column is a favorite of tourists. It is one of the most popular beaches on the island. It has a tavern that one can visit from Fykiadha Beach.

Places of Interest

The Archaeological site of Vryokastro

Vryokastro is located between the bay of Apokrousis and the port of Merichas, on the northwestern side of the island. According to findings, the ancient city was been inhabited since the 7th and 10th century BC. It was called Kythnos and it was abandoned by its inhabitants, who moved to the Castle of Oria in Loutra.
