Location

Gavrio is the primary and most well-known harbour for sailing on the island of Andros. This is where all visitors travelling by ferry first arrive. It is a lively spot, located on the northwestern part of the island where some of the top swimming spots can also be found. The bay is usually crowded during the day with ferries dropping off visitors from Athens. Although sheltered from the Meltemi winds to a degree, gusts can make manoeuvring a bit difficult.

Navigation

Gavrio has a depth of 4-6m and charters can either go stern or bows-to between the ferry piers. Anchoring along the NE side is best avoided or you risk being blocked by the ferry parking here overnight.  If travelling towards Gavrio from Batsi further south, care should be taken near Rosa, an above-water reef about 200m ESE of Ak Marmara. Other areas that can be dangerous when approaching Gavrio are Vouvi on the SE entrance and the shoal waters that extend at quite a distance from the islets of Akamatis and Plati. The port has a mud and weed bottom that offers relatively good holding for motor yachts.

Provisioning

Gavrio is located near all necessary amenities needed for your yacht or boat which makes it an ideal spot for sailing in the Greek islands. There are supermarkets, bakeries and various taverns at a close distance for shopping and dining out. There is also an ATM available and frequent buses to Chora and other villages.

Types of Boats that are in the Marina

You will find yachts, fishing boats, deck and dinghy boats.

Capacity and Technical Data

Gavrio tends to be quite busy when the ferry boats arrive but is quieter in the late evening and at night when everyone moves on to nearby villages. It is one of the best-sheltered spots for yachts on the island of Andros. Keep in mind that electricity and water are available but can be unreliable

Here is a video showing the general area and activities to look forward to in Gavrio.
