Location

A lovely anchorage point, Palaioupolis is located on the west coast of Andros, east of the coastal village of Batsi. While not the most popular spot nowadays, this is a historic spot. The village that gave the beach its name was the first capital of the island and its history can be traced back to the 7th century BC. Only small parts of the ancient city survive to this day, the rest sunk to the bottom of the sea after an earthquake. The beach is popular with divers and archaeology buffs that seek to explore the treasures of the past but otherwise quiet. The site of Palaioupolis can be reached by hiking up the hill. There is also a small museum in the village where visitors can get a better idea of the history of the area.

Navigation

Palaioupolis is approximately five SE of Gavrio. Care is needed in certain areas for there has been reports that the holding ground can be tricky in certain areas. When the weather is calm, it is possible to anchor closer to the shore. To avoid the swells created by the ferries anchor at the N end of the bay. Although exposed to the south winds, it provides relatively good shelter from the Meltemi.

Provisioning

This is a quiet area and not suited as a provisioning stop. The beach is not organized and there are no beach bars located nearby. Closer to the village and the small museum you will find a small mini-market for refreshments

Types of Boats that are in the Marina

This is a small and quiet anchorage spot. Most likely you will not be sharing with any other yachts.

Capacity and Technical Data

This is one of the most beautiful anchorages on the island of Andros. Small houses framed the steep hillside while the ruins complete the picture, offering the perfect lunch spot.

Here is a video showing the setting of Palaioupolis that yacht charters can look forward to.
