Ormos Khalidhoniki (Spathi) is an anchorage in Kea.

Overview

The small craggy island of Kea is situated around 13 miles from Cape Sounion and is the northernmost of the Cyclades chain. With its proximity to the mainland port of Rafina, it’s a popular weekend getaway for many Athenians, whether they’re sailors or have second homes here. However, away from the peak times, it’s a wonderfully tranquil retreat, retaining its Cycladic authenticity with an arty, cosmopolitan vibe.

Kea is largely rugged and barren, with a mountain chain running down the east side. Nearer the coasts its greener, with vineyards, orchards and wooded areas common. The capital Ioulis, which is a car-free zone, sits in the centre of the island and, with its picturesque winding streets and traditional houses is well-worth a visit.

Khalidoniki bay, in the NE corner of Kea, is often referred to as Spathi bay. It provides great shelter in NW-N Meltemi winds, despite some swell being pushed in on occasions. It’s best to anchor near the head of the cove, on the rocky north side, where it’s 3-5m deep, and the bottom is sandy, with patches of weed.

General Information

As a direct road has been built recently, the cove is now feeling busier and more ‘developed’- it’s a less secluded anchorage than it used to be and in peak times can even feel crowded with motor launches and other craft. However, out of the peak times, it’s still a great option for a relaxing day, with crystal clear waters which are perfect for swimming and a sport of snorkelling

Beaches

There’s an attractive sandy beach here and, on one side it’s possible to rent loungers and umbrellas. The other side is more free and easy – bring whatever you like! There’s a cafe in the small settlement nearby, and it seems likely that more facilities tourists will be added with time.
