Location
Ormos Plaka is the southernmost anchorage on the west coast of Andros island. This is a lovely spot to visit when sailing around the Cyclades, with a unique local flavour. In the past, this was a known meeting spot for fishermen. Traces of a prehistoric settlement have been found nearby. This is a quiet spot during the day and is also suitable for overnight stays. The small houses that are visible on the beach are known as “konakia” and are where fishermen used to store their boats. This part of Andros is wild and rarely visited by most travellers.
Navigation
While approaching the bay after Cape Zagora, it is best to anchor at 2-4m. The bottom is primarily sand and has good holding. The swell from passing ferries can make it a bit uncomfortable at times. Meltemi winds can also bring strong gusts off the high land.
Provisioning
Plaka can be a quiet and pleasant stop for lunch or an overnight stay. There are no shops located nearby for adequate supplies. The beach is not organized and there are no tavernas or beach bars in the vicinity.
Capacity and Technical Data
The anchorage of Plaka is a great choice for those sailing in the Cyclades if you desire a secluded and quiet spot away from the crowds. The ruins of ancient Zagora that were excavated in the 1970s are visible on Cape Zagora. The water is crystal clear and cold. This area is known for its high salt concentration.
