Greece has more islands than any other crewed-charter destination in the Mediterranean: over 200 inhabited, spread across five distinct cruising areas, with warm water from May to October and prices below the French Riviera or Sardinia for the same type of boat.

Catamaran, sailing yacht or motor yacht: what to charter in Greece.
In Greece the area decides the boat. Wind and distance call for a motor yacht; calm water and short hops, a catamaran. Always crewed: captain, chef and hostess at minimum.
Crewed catamaran
The boat we book most in Greece: four or five equal double cabins, a stable deck and the best price per person, from around €30,000 a week. Perfect in the Ionian and the Saronic Gulf, where legs are short and the sea is calm. In the Cyclades in July and August, only on a large catamaran with a captain who knows the meltemi.
Sailing yacht
For those who come to sail. The Cyclades meltemi that gets in a catamaran's way makes a sailing yacht's week. Longer legs and less interior space, in exchange for silence and sail. We recommend it to small groups who have sailed before.
Motor yacht
The only way to fit Mykonos and Santorini into one week comfortably. Speed to cross between islands in the morning and be anchored by midday, big cabins and separate crew decks. From around €60,000 a week; most of our Greece clients book between €100,000 and €250,000.
What it costs and when to go.
How much a Greece yacht charter costs
The weekly price covers the boat and the crew. Two things are added to it:
- APA (Advance Provisioning Allowance): usually 25 to 35% of the charter price. It covers fuel, food and drink, berths and fees. Whatever is not spent is returned at the end.
- VAT: charters in Greece are taxed at 13%, below Spain's 21% or Italy's 22%.
A real example: a 35 metre motor yacht at €150,000 a week with ten guests comes to €15,000 per person before APA and VAT. A 15 metre catamaran at €60,000 with eight guests, €7,500 per person.
The crew tip is voluntary and decided at the end of the week. In the Mediterranean 5 to 15% is usual if the service has been good.
When to charter a yacht in Greece
The season runs from May to October. July and August are the most requested and most expensive months, and in the Cyclades the meltemi blows, a north wind that can pass 25 knots in the afternoon. June and September are the weeks we recommend to anyone who can choose: water at 23 to 26 degrees, less wind and prices clearly below summer. The Ionian and the Saronic Gulf are sheltered from the meltemi and work all summer.
How a good week is sailed
In legs of one to three hours. You leave in the morning, reach the next island by midday and the afternoon is for the water and the village.
Long crossings, like Mykonos to Santorini, are done before dawn while you sleep, or not at all. A Greek captain knows which bay is sheltered on any given day, which is why local crew makes the difference here.
Cyclades, Ionian or Saronic.
Cyclades Islands
What it is like
The Cyclades are the Greece of the photographs: white houses, blue domes, Mykonos, Santorini, Paros and Naxos. Also the windiest area with the longest distances between islands. You come for the scenery and the nightlife, and you sail it wisely: a motor yacht or a large catamaran, and a captain who reads the meltemi.
The route
7 nights from Athens or Mykonos: Kea or Kythnos on day one, Sifnos and Milos in the south, Paros and Naxos in the centre, Mykonos to finish. Santorini fits if the boat is a motor yacht and the captain crosses overnight. On a catamaran, a week in the western Cyclades without Santorini.
Ionian Islands
What it is like
The Ionian is green, with turquoise water, olive trees down to the shore and a sea almost without wind in summer. Corfu, Paxos, Antipaxos, Lefkada, Kefalonia and Zakynthos, with stone villages and tavernas on the quay. It is the area we recommend to families and first-time charterers.
The route
7 nights from Corfu or Lefkada: Paxos and the Antipaxos beaches, Sivota, the Lefkada canal, Meganisi, Fiskardo on Kefalonia and Ithaca. Legs of one to two hours and a cove to anchor in every night. Works equally well on a catamaran, sailing yacht or motor yacht.
Saronic Gulf and Peloponnese
What it is like
An hour from Athens begins the Greece without an airport: Aegina, Poros, car-free Hydra, Spetses and the Peloponnese coast down to Nafplio. Calm sea, elegant towns, and the option of stepping off the plane and being under way the same afternoon.
The route
7 nights from Athens: Aegina or Agistri, Poros, Hydra, Spetses, Nafplio and Cape Sounion with the Temple of Poseidon on the way back. The easiest route in Greece, for any type of boat, and the one we choose when the group wants to swim more and sail less.

A Greek Odyssey
I have chartered a few times and mostly from one of the big brokerage companies that advertise very heavily in Boat International. Can you see Mykonos and Santorini in one week?
Yes, on a motor yacht. It is about 70 nautical miles and the captain usually crosses before dawn, while the group sleeps, so no swimming day is lost.
On a catamaran we do not recommend it in July and August: with the meltemi it is a long, uncomfortable crossing. If the group wants Santorini on a catamaran, it is better visited by plane before or after the charter.
Do I need a boating licence?
No. Every yacht on this page is chartered with professional crew: captain, chef and hostess at minimum.
You do not sail, unless you want to take the helm for a while with the captain beside you.
What does the weekly price include?
The boat and the crew.
Fuel, food, drink, berths and fees are paid from the APA, a fund of 25 to 35% settled at the end. Greek VAT at 13% is added to the charter price.
Where do you start, Athens or the islands?
It depends on the area. The Cyclades and the Saronic start from Athens, with direct flights from Madrid and Barcelona; the Cyclades also from Mykonos. The Ionian starts from Corfu, Lefkada or Preveza.
Most charters in Greece run Saturday to Saturday; we confirm it boat by boat.
How many days do you recommend?
Seven nights. That is what it takes to do one area without rushing; with ten or fourteen you combine two.
Some boats accept six nights in low season; less than that is a getaway, not a boat holiday.
