Ayios Yeoryios
Ayios Yeoryios (or Agios Georgios) is a small Chora located towards the northern end of Iraklia, best known for its beautiful, small hamlet. It is the only inhabited place on the island along with the smaller Chora of Panagia.
Although the bay is open to the northeastern meltemi, it is not always brutal. However, care must be taken to avoid sudden gusts. Some accommodation is available at the Chora.
Mooring at Ayios Yeoryios
The entrance to Ayios Yeoryios is not clearly visible when you sail from the north, but is easily navigable from the nearby Mirsini anchorage. The latter is also the ferry path between the two anchorages.
Anchor suggestion is between three to six meters into the sandy seabed. It provides good holding. You will find some rocks and old mooring chains on the bottom, so caution is recommended as you sail nearer to the shore. Use a trip-line if needed.
Provisioning and Services
There are tavernas ashore that will provide sufficient provisioning for quick stops and short stays. Going into the hamlet will be worthwhile, with access to local food and architecture.
