You can never start your yacht charter planning too early.
For a Greek charter in July or August, start 6 to 12 months ahead. Make it 9 to 12 months if you already have one specific yacht in mind. June and September stay open much longer.
Booking late still works. There is only one of each yacht, so waiting costs you choice, not money. Six weeks before departure most Greek calendars still show no booking for those weeks, which is where we start asking.
Below is what the calendar looks like at 12 months, at 3 months and at 6 weeks out, and the one date you cannot move.
Broker insight
The top Greek weeks on the best-known yachts are reserved about a year out, and most of those clients were not in a hurry. They started while there was still a choice. If one particular yacht matters more to you than the dates, tell us which one and we will ask her manager to put her on option while you decide. An option commits you to nothing and it holds the boat. That is usually all an early start needs to be.

Book 6 to 12 months in advance for July and August
July and August are the hardest weeks to book, because they are high season in Greece. Start 6 to 12 months before you sail and you choose from most of the fleet instead of from what is left.
Bookings for next summer are already being made. On 9 September 2026 we checked 568 crewed yachts across Greece, the Aegean and the Ionian for the week of 31 July 2027. 25 had a confirmed booking. Another 9 were on option, which means a broker was holding them for a client.
Most of the fleet had no booking recorded. So 11 months ahead is not early, and it is not too late either.
9 to 12 months if you want one specific yacht
Name one yacht and you need more time than if you name a week. 9 to 12 months is the answer when you want a specific boat. 6 to 12 months is enough when you want a specific destination.
There is no safe number for a named yacht. A boat with an unusual cabin layout can be the only one of her kind in the Mediterranean, and boats like that go on option more than a year out.
You do not have to decide immediately. We can ask the central agent to put a yacht on option, which holds her for a short agreed period while you decide. Tell us which yacht you cannot replace and we will do that as soon as she matters more to you than the dates.
These book up first:
- A named yacht, or an unusual cabin layout.
- Larger groups that need several equal double cabins.
- A fixed region, such as an Ionian-only or Dodecanese-only route.
- School-holiday weeks, which fill from the parents’ calendar rather than the fleet’s. Slowing down is the lesson most first-timers take away, and it is one of the 13 things people wish they had known before chartering in Greece.
The more flexible you are, the less time you need. Flexible on region and dates, 6 months is comfortable. Fixed on the yacht, the region and the week, a year ahead is sensible.
Is 3 months ahead too late for a Greek charter?
At 3 months you choose from what is still free rather than from the whole fleet. That only matters if you have already decided on one boat.
Any percentage you read for how much of the Greek fleet is booked at 3 months is a guess. Central agents delete past charters, and some keep no public calendar at all, so the only honest answer for your week comes from asking the managers.
3 months out, these 3 things open up the list:
- Flexible dates. Moving a week either way opens boats that a fixed Saturday rules out.
- Flexible region. Searching more than one island group gives us more calendars to check.
- A brief instead of a boat name. Guest numbers, cabins and budget give us a much longer list.

Is 6 weeks before departure too late to book?
Six weeks before departure, September and October are the weeks in Greece that come with a discount.
Three examples from our desk in the 2026 shoulder season:
- A Lagoon 55 catamaran in the Ionian, 10 percent below its usual October weekly rate.
- A sailing catamaran at 20 percent off, to fill September and October gaps.
- A 39.6m motor yacht waiving relocation fees from Athens or Corfu until 31 October.
Offers like these are normal in the Greek shoulder season and they change through the autumn. An owner would rather fill a gap between two charters than leave it empty.
Late does not mean sold out. Under 4 weeks out, 442 of the 568 yachts we track had no booking recorded for the week of 3 October 2026. Recorded is not the same as available, because only the central agent can confirm that, but it is not a full fleet either.
If you need July or August at 6 weeks out, ask anyway. Expect a short list built from gaps between charters. Changing your base port, or moving the week by a few days, makes that list longer. If nothing fits, we will show you what the same budget buys in late September.
When is the final payment due on a Greek charter?
Final payment on a Greek crewed charter is due 6 weeks before you board. On signing you pay 50 percent of the charter fee. The balance, plus VAT and the APA, falls due 6 weeks before embarkation, and some MYBA contracts write it as 45 days, which is 3 days earlier. Your own contract carries the exact date.
Book inside that window and the full balance is due at almost the same time as the contract. That is the real limit on a very late booking, not availability.
Three things have to happen before a charter is secured: the central agent confirms availability, you sign the contract, and the first payment arrives. That normally runs over a few working days.

Booking early does not change the price
Waiting does not raise the price, and booking a year ahead does not lower it. The owner sets the rate per yacht per season through the central agent, and it does not change as the week fills.
Some operators publish an early-booking discount of their own, and we ask about your week as a matter of course.
What changes over time is which yachts are left, not what they cost. That is the honest reason to start early. Expecting hotel-style or villa-style discounts is one of the 10 most common Greece yacht charter booking mistakes.
