Island Overview
Sikinos is a relatively small and unknown island of the Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. It is located between the more well-known islands of Ios to the E and Folegandros to the W. With a population of fewer than 300 people this is not an island of glamour and glitz like Mykonos and Santorini but private moments and intense relaxation. At the same, its proximity to the popular summer hubs of the Cyclades means yacht charters can have the best of both worlds and combine their visit with other popular destinations. There are only three settlements on the island of Sikinos: Alopronia, Kastro and Chorio. The lack of safe anchorages and rugged landscape contributed to this idea of a remote and inhospitable destination
Navigation
Visitors arriving at Sikinos by yacht will head to Skala – the only port and organized anchorage point on the island. Skala is situated on the SW of Ak Malta and is open to the S. It offers relatively good shelter from the Meltemi. When the weather is calm, Nisis Ay Yeoryios and Ak Malta can also be used for a refreshing swim and a lunch spot.
General Information
In more ways than one, Sikinos has no organized facilities, tourist amenities or infrastructure. This is precisely what makes it an attractive choice for visitors during the busy and crowded summer months. Keep in mind that there is no pharmacy on the island so bring all medication and a well-stocked first-aid kit with you.
History of Sikinos
Just like nearby Folegandros, Sikinos was a place of political exile that seldom featured in the history books as a place of importance. However, it was known since antiquity for its high-quality wine. In ancient years, the island even bore the name “Oinoe” meaning wine in Greek. Manalis Winery has revived some of those Cycladic varieties in a modern and environmentally friendly space that is open to visitors but is one of the only notable examples in recent years. The current name of the island comes from mythology and is linked to the son of King Thoas and nymph Niis, who was banished from the island of Limnos.
Places of Interest
Sikinos is not known for its attractions. When it comes to things to do in Sikinos, lounging on a beach, reading and relaxing are the preferred activities for visitors. Nevertheless, there are some beautiful spots to explore in the two main villages Kastro and Chora.
In Kastro, you will also find the blue and white church of Pantanassa built in 1787 and the Monastery of Zoodohos Pigi that was constructed in 1690. The monastery was a place of shelter and refuge during the frequent pirate raids the island had to face in its long history. From Chora, you may also embark on an hour-long hike to reach the Monastery of Episkopi. This ancient temple dates back to the 3rd century A.D. Visiting the interior is not possible due to renovations but stay for the sunset and the sprawling views.
