History of Alimos

Alimos is a municipality in southern Athens and was founded in 1968. Alimos is located on the coast of the Saronic Gulf close to downtown Athens. The region features some of the earliest urban settlements in Europe, which dates back to the Bronze Age and Neolithic period. Some of the archaeological finds include Mycenaean workshops, forts, Paleochristian and Byzantine churches.

Alimos was once a fishing town located on the outskirts of Athens during classical antiquity and was among the demes of Athens. The Ano Kalamaki area constitutes a distinct settlement that became the urban Deme of Euonymus during classical antiquity. During the 5th and 4th centuries, the peak of Ano Kalamaki, it was among the most densely populated communities of ancient Athens. During the period, it has its theater, acropolis, and religious holidays and some of its residents played a major role in the politics and public life of Athens.

The most significant historical background of Alimos is that the historian Thucydides was born here. Thucydides tells the story of the war between Sparta and Athens in 411 BC through his “History of the Peloponnesian war.” He is regarded as “the father of scientific history,” and he is a popular figure and emblem in Alimos.
